Cool ocean breezes, soft sand and the refreshing sounds of waves hitting the shore. What is there not to like?
Escaping the searing heat and pavement of the city, it’s always nice to make an escape to the beach for our annual week of vacation. I’m lucky enough to live in a great part of the country where one can enjoy the many benefits that a metro area can bring, access to several beautiful beaches and islands is only a short ride (or ferry) away.
This is where I like to take a deep breath and exhale. To relax my mind and ease my thoughts, and even allow myself to dream a little.
Since my first trip to Block Island, a wonderful little secret that's only a short 50-minute ferry ride from Point Judith off the coast of Rhode Island, I began to dream about what it would mean to live year-round in such a place.
The Island is buzzing with activity on this particular summer morning. Kids unlocking their bikes, shops and restaurants setting up for a busy day, old timers (like me) waiting for the first shipment of the regional newspapers to hit the stand.
The perfect escape. No office phones ringing. No traffic backups to navigate during the morning commute. Just that alone is reason enough to visualize calling this place home.
Though this is the summer. How about the fall, the icy winters that seem to have stretched late into spring in recent years? Possible. Sure. The dozen or so folks who are full-time residents seem to do just fine.
Reality says that the situation would have to be perfect. A professional opportunity would have to fit the puzzle piece to make it all a reality. But technology these days is closing into where one can commute to any part of the country or the world in a matter of seconds.
An office window into a harbor full of fishing boats, ferries, and sail boats. Sipping a cup of coffee by the fire as the snow blankets the trees.
I guess I’m allowed to dream once in a while.
Even from a place like Block Island.
